How do words influence children’s and young people’s sense of belonging in complex lives? In everyday family and school contexts, words such as “migrant“; or “binational” are often used to describe complexity. As intercultural practitioners, we also use terms like “Third Culture Kids” or “cross-cultural“. Yet language does more than describe reality. It shapes emotional orientation, expectations, and the lived experience of belonging, especially during identity-forming phases.

In this reflective online talk, Katrin Sihling explores how language and labels influence children’s and adolescents’ sense of belonging under complexity. Drawing on lived experience and real-life stories, she looks at how multicultural identity is actually experienced by children and families. The talk opens a reflective space around the role of adults as language-shapers and meaning-makers. Using the metaphor of “turning stamps into brushes”, participants are invited to consider how offering different words can support belonging not by fixing identity, but by keeping it open and flexible. The session invites intercultural practitioners to reflect on belonging as an emotional and relational experience.
